Why I Volunteer: Aurora Finds Purpose, Connection, and Community at VIVA PIMA!

Q. You recently became a volunteer. What drew you to VIVA PIMA!?
A. Once my children were in school, I had more time—and a growing desire to give back to our community. I began volunteering at Casas Alitas, primarily as a translator and also in the kitchen. When it closed in January 2025, I felt the loss of that connection, but I knew I wasn’t ready to stop serving. I began looking for another place where I could make a meaningful difference.
A neighbor recommended VIVA PIMA!, calling it a “good group.” Around the same time, I met Esperanza Ardon while dropping off donations. The warmth of that conversation stayed with me and made me feel that VIVA PIMA! might be exactly where I was meant to continue giving back.
Q. How did you find the process of getting involved with VIVA PIMA!?
A. I appreciated how thoughtful and welcoming the process was. I toured the facility and spent time in the different work areas, which helped me discover that Mousetrap was where I could contribute most naturally.
I’m naturally a little shy, so walking into a new place can be difficult. But from the very beginning, everyone greeted me with warmth, patience, and a genuine willingness to help. That kindness quickly eased my nerves. Before long, I didn’t simply feel welcome—I felt that I belonged.
Q. What do you find most fulfilling about volunteering at VIVA PIMA!?
A. I have always felt called to help my community, and VIVA PIMA!’s mission touched me immediately: giving children new clothes—not used ones—and helping people create a sense of home as they begin again. These may seem like simple things, but they offer dignity, hope, and the reassurance that someone cares. That is what makes this work so meaningful to me.
The Mousetrap volunteers work incredibly hard and take real pride in making every item look inviting. I love imagining the moment someone discovers just what they need—or an unexpected treasure—at a price they can afford. Knowing our care can bring someone that spark of joy makes every hour worthwhile.
Q. What would you say to anyone considering volunteering with VIVA PIMA!?
A. I would wholeheartedly say: give it a try. Volunteering with VIVA PIMA! has brought purpose, joy, and connection into my life. It is a dedicated, hardworking group of people united by a genuine desire to help others. To me, it is more than an organization—it is a caring community within our larger community. I’m proud and grateful to be part of it.
