A new pair of shoes, clothes that fit, and a backpack of their own can make a meaningful difference in a child’s school day.
In her opinion article, “Community support needed for school clothing and new shoes,” VIVA PIMA! Executive Director Nicola Hartmann explains why these essentials matter and how our community can help children arrive at school ready to learn.
School Clothing Is an Essential Need
For families balancing rent, groceries, utilities, transportation, and medical expenses, buying school clothing can be difficult. Children may arrive with shoes they have outgrown or clothing that no longer fits.
Hartmann’s article explores how these challenges can affect a child’s comfort, confidence, and participation at school. Providing new clothing helps ease that burden for families while giving children a stronger sense of belonging.
How VIVA PIMA! Kids Helps
Through VIVA PIMA! Kids, we provide new school clothing, shoes, socks, backpacks, and underwear to children whose families need support.
At the time of the article, the program supported 43 schools across five districts, along with partners including Emerge and the Southern Arizona Children’s Advocacy Center. Hartmann reported that nearly 5,000 students had received clothing during the previous school year, with additional schools waiting to participate.
Behind those numbers are children and families navigating difficult circumstances. Hartmann shares the story of a grandmother raising her grandchildren and describes a school shopping event where many participating students were experiencing homelessness.

Community Support Makes It Possible
Our volunteers, thrift shop shoppers, donors, and community partners help turn generosity into new clothing for local children. Every contribution helps us continue this work and reach families who need it.
You can get involved by making a donation, volunteering with VIVA PIMA!, or shopping at our thrift shop.
As Hartmann reminds readers, helping children feel comfortable and prepared for school is an investment in their education, dignity, and future.
